Speed & Sport Photo Album Showcase - From Our Shop

We built this late '60s Rickman Triumph twin in 1991, complete with the 700cc four-valve-per-cylinder Rickman top-end conversion. Triumph Rickman Roadracer Triumph Rickman Roadracer Close-up shows fabricated rearsets, Rickman forks and hubs, Borrani rims and Lockheed disc brakes.

Skip Otto's Triumph TR6 motocrosser. Even the most trained eye might think this is a Rickman, but it's actually a US-made frame, reportedly by Harry Hindall in the early '70s. The frame looks nearly identical to a Rickman MkIII, and accepts Rickman bodywork, but is entirely heliarc-welded, and the oil fill cap and other details differ slightly. Rickman 650

Triumph Roadracer A stock-frame "proddy" Triumph roadracer, featuring a massive English-made alloy swingarm, Mikuni carburetors and Joe Hunt magneto.

Rickman Triumph 650 with Betor forks, Rickman magnesium hubs, ACK primary cover and alloy fuel tank. Raced 1991-'92 by Matt Hilgenberg, it eventually ended up with Michigan's Mark Nelson. Rickman 650

Pursang Mk4 This Bultaco Pursang Mk4 is quite original, with the exception of exhaust pipe, tires and a darker number plate background color. This late Model #68 is the last of the "box-fender" Pursangs.

A 1971 Husqvarna 400 Cross which shows a good balance between a showroom-stock restoration and a ready-to-ride reconditioning. The concessions that were made to preserve original parts and make the bike a little more durable and nice to ride include: Gunnar Gasser throttle, modern tires, Mikuni carburetor and plastic fenders and number plates. Husqvarna 400

Metrella This #23 Bultaco Metralla has the "Kit America" tank, seat (to be padded), fairing and expansion chamber (chrome, yikes!).

Reputedly a one-time a Johnson Motors "shop bike," this 1960 BSA Gold Star saw one too many trips to the chrome/polish shop before I got it. Modifications before it began AHRMA racing include: fiberglass tank, CZ footpegs, Sun rims, Metzeler tires, Works Performance shocks and Ceriani forks. 1960 BSA Gold Star

Rickman MkIV B50MX A Rickman MkIV chassis with BSA B50MX engine. REH hubs, Akront rims and Ceriani/Works Performance suspension complete the package.

Maryland's Bud Ledvinka commissioned this 1965 Bultaco Metisse in TT trim. It's a very accurate restoration, which he claimed spent some time in the Smithsonian, but I don't know whether to believe that story... Bultaco Metisse TT

Pursang 250 This 1974 Bultaco Pursang 250 (Model #120) was built several years ago, before decent rear fenders were available!

In 1989, Speed & Sport owner Matt Hilgenberg completed these two machines to compete in AHRMA's Premier motocross classes. In the foreground is a 1965 Triumph Cub, which is amazingly stock, with the exception of the tank and front end. The pre-unit Triumph 500 Rickman in the background is still a favorite. Both machines have won several AHRMA Regional and National championships, including, most recently, the 1998 Premier 500 Expert title. Triumph Cub & 500

Bultaco Metisse AHRMA's Classic 250 class allows some updates to the Bultaco Metisse. This one uses wheels and fork legs from a 1973 Pursang, with Betor triple clamps. A Motoplat ignition completed the modernization. This machine won an AHRMA title before being retired.

Worthy of a place in a period Rickman brochure, this MkIV BSA B44 scrambler has a few Rickman tricks, such as the massive 1-5/8" forks and magnesium hubs. Rickman MkIV B44

MRD Triumph 650 Built from an MRD frame kit and NOS Rickman hubs (refinished in red!!), this pre-unit Triumph 650 transmits power through a BSA Scrambles gearbox and a double-row primary set-up borrowed from a unit-construction bike. Pipes, axles, engines plates, etc. were fabricated by Speed & Sport.
Owned by Greg Owen.

This quick-turnaround resto turned a complete but ratty BSA Spitfire MkIII into a nice machine, ready for everyday use. Photos are from the "before decal" state. BSA 650 Spitfire

Husqvarna 400R A 1973 Husqvarna 400CR with custom "smoke-silver" colored frame. With the maroon tank, it looked quite nice! Hank Jones ordered this racer.

Bultaco made thousands of #26 Matadors, which sold approximately from 1967-1971, with few changes. This one received modern tires for current road use, but is otherwise very stock. Bultaco Matador

Ossa SDR John Winslett found this complete Ossa SDR, which needed only cosmetic restoration.
It makes a nice stablemate for his Matador!

After taking nearly 10 years off from riding trials, Speed & Sport's Matt Hilgenberg built this 1965 Triumph Tiger Cub as a sister bike to his Cub scrambler. The stock tanks, pipe, muffler, air filter, shocks, controls and chromed-steel rims were retained for a period appearance, but the Betor forks, Rickman front hub, electronic magneto and Amal Concentric carburetor updated performance and reliability. The powdercoated cycle parts and cad-plated hardware for a 1967 Triumph TR6 await assembly. Triumph TR6 Bits 1967 Triumph TR6 The '67 TR6 in its finished state. This machine belongs to Mike Taylor, owner of Barnett Tool & Engineering, and has been featured in his company's catalog.

1954 BSA Gold Star Terry Pratt's 1954 BSA BB34GS Gold Star. Typical of AHRMA Premier 500 motocross machines, Ceriani forks, alloy engine plates and Sun rims are fitted. The seat is an aftermarket Gold Star scrambles part, and the front hub from a Greeves Griffon.

A late Norton ES2 engine, ready to go in its wideline Featherbed frame. Norton ES2

ESO 500 Oklahoma's Roger Ganner owns this ESO 500 scrambler engine. The 1950s Czech engine is unique in that it featured unit-construction (engine and gearbox all in one casting) and left-hand shift. With a three-speed gearbox and English Lucas Competition magneto, the ESO's weight is on par with a unit BSA single! Ganner rides the bike quite effectively in AHRMA Premier 500 Intermediate competition.
